Essential Beaded Rim Basket — Fri-AM-1

Learn to coil pine needles onto the rim of a wide open gourd while incorporating wood beads into your work. You will learn how to seamlessly start and finish off your basket. Repetition will reinforce how to add a bead to your pine needle baskets. Expect to finish project in class.

  • Student needs to bring: Sharp scissors, jewelry size needle nose plyers, and fine tipped wire clippers
  • Instructor will provide: Prepared gourd, glycerinated pine needles, wood beads, artificial sinew, sewing needle, and emailed tutorial.

Students will learn wood burning techniques, carving techniques and some basic painting instructions. This will be a busy class and if student doesn't finish in class, they will have the "know" how to do so after class. Expect to finish this project in class. 

  • Level of Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Prerequisite skills for student: Wood burner and carving experience is helpful but not absolutely necessary
  • Student needs to brings: Variable temperature wood burner with skew, writer or ball tips, rotary tool with inverted cone and different size ball cutter burrs (carbide), dust mask, a big soft brush or rag for wiping away dust from project, apron
  • Instructor will provide: Prepared gourd, paint, brushes, extra wood burners and carvers to loan for the class purpose. All other materials needed for this class. Pattern will be applied to gourd before class so students will be able to woodburn right away. A tutorial and pattern is included to take home in this class.

Altered Turtle Basket — Fri-PM-1

Use up your gourd scraps to create this Altered Turtle Basket. We will start with a prepared gourd shard that resembles a turtle shell. We will learn how to coil pine needles onto the shard while incorporating beads to create our unique turtle baskets.

  • Level of Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Prerequisite skills for student: Some pine needle coiling is helpful.
  • Student needs to bring: Sharp scissors, jewelry size needle nose plyers, and fine tip wire trimmers
  • Instructor will provide: Prepared gourd shard (decoupaged, sealed with resin & holes drilled), pine needles, beads, stitching needle, thread, and tutorial emailed after the class

You'll be introduced to Alcohol Ink Pearls. This is a good class to use the Pearl inks. You will wood burn, carve, and use 2 different textures on this piece. This project looks great on different type of gourds.

Intermediate Vinyl Resist Technique — Fri-ALL-4

Learn to design a layered image gourd using a vinyl resist technique. Cynthia will show you how to cut and design a plant motif for the cannonball gourd using your ruler, X-Acto knife and blank vinyl. You can then create your own designs at home. Students will be doing all the cutting for the vinyl resist plant design. A cannonball gourd will be supplied pre-cut, cleaned, and ready to work on.  

  • Instructor will provide: Cannonball gourd (sizes will vary—first come, first pick), vinyl, gloves, hole punch, alcohol inks, felt, heat gun, shoe polish, furniture paste, and soft towels. Extra blank vinyl sheets will be available for sale. 
  • Student needs to bring: Exacto knife, 6" ruler, heat gun, wear old clothes.

Scratchin' Rooster — Sat-AM-1

A little of everything in this class! This class will teach students some smooth lining with your woodburners as well as using colored pencil to fill in your roosters character. Borders will be put on with an ink dye that will need to be heat set. Some skin removal and carving as well will be offered in this class.

  • Level of Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Prerequisite skills: Some wood burning and rotary tool experience. 
  • Student needs to bring: Variable temperature woodburner with knife or skew tip, ball or writing tip; rotary tool with skin removing burr, ball burrs of a couple different sizes; mask; eye protection; ear protection; apron' soft brush or rag' pencil and paper; colored pencils (prisma colored pencils recommended by instructor if you are purchasing a set ahead of time)
  • Instructor will provide: Prepared gourds, tutorial with pictures, pattern, all other supplies needed with the "know how" to finish at home if not finished in class. Woodburner or rotary tool offered upon request

Cork `n Beads — SAT-PM-3

Ever wonder what to do with wine bottle corks? In this class the student will use reed, wine corks and beads to weave on the top of a gourd bowl. The project may have alternate beads or reed than shown in the photo. A fully prepared gourd will be provided. No prior knowledge of weaving is required for the class. Sorry, wine will NOT be provided by the instructor. Expect to finish project in class.

  • Student needs to bring: Apron, small kitchen towel, and scissors (not your good fabric scissors) to cut the reed

Carve a unique Gourd Antler with a touch of light wood burning for a realistic effect. Enhanced with decorative beads, leather pieces and a real antler burr (color and size of the burrs varies). Expect to finish project in class.

  • Student needs to bring: Carver with a saber tooth cylinder burr, wood burner with a rounded skew, and E6000
  • Instructor will provide: Tutorial, pattern, gourd piece, antler burr, beads, leather strips, bail and sandpaper.

This class if a faux leather floral tooling class. You will wood burn and carve a sunflower design and add faux stitching. You will use Ink dyes to add color. Expect to finish project in class.

Altered Step-It-Up with big hole beads and foot — Sat-ALL-3

Learn how to coil glycerinated pine needles onto a prepared gourd to make a unique vessel. You will start with attaching a “foot” and working on shaping skills to create stability. The rim will be worked in a step-up design using large hole beads. Leave class with knowledge on how to finish project at home.

  • Prerequisite skills for student: Some coiling experience will be helpful but not required.
  • Student needs to bring: Sharp scissors, jewelry size wire clippers, and needle nose plyers
  • Instructor will supply: Prepared gourd (covered with Altered Pages, Sealed with resin, and holes drilled), glycerinated pine needles, artificial sinew, stitching needle, big hole beads, and a detailed tutorial that will be emailed after the class.

Indian Spirit Doll — Sat-ALL-4

We will be using necks of gourds to make a wall hanging of Indian Spirit Dolls.  Each Spirit Doll will be original as you come up with your own style.  Patterns will be handed out to combine designs or create one of your own. The dolls will be approximately 7”-8” tall and 3”-4” wide.

  • Prerequisite skills for student: Must be able to paint or use tangles from a pattern handout.
  • Student needs to bring: Bring a board (such as a fence picket) or something to mount the doll onto—smaller than 5” x 12”, Aleene’s tacky glue, Micron pin .5 or larger in black, awl, acrylic paints (black, white, turquoise, red, yellow), pencil/ eraser, woodburner and skew pen (optional), Xacto knife

Huichol (wet-choi) Bowl — Sun-1

Learn a bead work technique from descendants of the ancient Aztecs, the indigenous Huichol people from southwest Mexico. Using bees wax and brightly colorful beads, like a mosaic with geometric shapes.

  • Instructor will provide: Tutorial, small gourd bowl, special bee's wax and colorful seed beads and heat gun

In this class the student will lay out concentric circles, wood burn, paint and seal the gourd and then lace a star within the circles.   It will be completed with a laced rim. Expect to finish project in class.

Student will learn how to transfer pattern to gourd, wood burn with shading, stipple with wood burner or carver , dye and place cabochon. Expect to finish project in class.

  • Student needs to bring: Clean whole or cut gourd or shards any size, (if cut must be cleaned on inside), pencil, gloves, carbon paper, heat gun, choice of ink dye if desired, Wood burner with shade pen of your choice, and medium to large ball tip. Carver with a medium carbide round bit.
