In this class you will create a unique wood burned gourd pendant. We will be using both sides of the gourd shard to create a reversible necklace. When the wood burning is finished we will add color using alcohol inks with the option of adding beads. We will also explore a crackle technique for jewelry.

 

Students need to bring: Personal wood burner if you have one. (Basic burners will be provided)

This basket is approximately 12 x 10 x 6 to the top of the weaving and the color choices will be an addition to any decor! Learn how to start/stop weave, twine and apply the rim to complete the basket. The handle is woven in as part of the basket so no worrying it will pull out later when it's filled to the rim. The seagrass is one long piece and woven as a continuous weave.

Learn how to make a simple musical instrument from a cleaned, cut, and prepared gourd. We'll discuss all types of thread and bead options and their pros and cons. A wide variety of beads and colors of thread and project tools will be provided so that students can make a shekeree that they will love. Participants who choose to do a complicated pattern may not finish the project in class, but the technique is easy to finish on their own. Full directions provided.

This large basket has a solid woven base and a hoop for a handle. The approximate size is 19 x 12 x 10 to the top of the waving. Students will learn how to "chicken feet" the fillers, twining and start/stop weaving , and lashing that will complete the basket. The large size makes it the perfect basket for gathering items of all shapes and sizes and can withstand a lot of weight.

Many tips and tricks for creating all types of animals besides dragons will be provided in this class as well. Participants will NOT be able to complete this project in the class as fully-finished dragons can take up to 40 hours.

This class will cover basics of pyrography on gourds. We will discuss the various pens/tips used to produce different design elements and spend time practicing these techniques. Tips and tricks will be shared. This class would best suit beginner and intermediate users of wood burners.

 

Students need to bring: variable temperature wood burner, any pens/tips you have (should at least have a small ball tip and a skew tip), mask, gourd shards for practice if you have them.

In this class, you will be carving a relief carved Santa ornament in Basswood from a band sawed cutout. You will learn basic facial structure, carving with the grain, roughing out the ornament, and detailing the carving. Most carvers struggle with carving eyes. I will tach you my technique which simplifies the process. Most carvers can expect to get their project done. Paint and brushes will be provided in case you have time to paint.

 

Students need to bring: sharp pencil, note pad, a cut-proof glove such as a fillet glove, sharp caring tools if you have them

The "Tree of Life" gourd lamp class is especially designed to provide success for all levels of gourd art enthusiasts. Create a uniquely designed gourd lamp that will cast warm, inviting light upon your walls and ceiling. While beginners can illustrate their design with decorative holes, more experienced crafters may carve and filigree their design. Connie and Dennis Brady are well-known gourd artists/instructors from Western Colorado who team teach to provide a fun, interactive experience for their students.

 

Prerequisite for students: Previous experience is helpful, but we ensure all students receive the help they need to complete the project.

Students need to bring: fully-charged drill with extra battery pack; hand powered carver or dremel; assorted bits for hole-drelling, filigree, carving, and sanding; woodburner, N95 mask, apron or clothing cover

Join Sue in this fun and therapeutic class. You will learn the process of designing your own Luminary Lamp from a cannonball gourd. No two lamps will be the same as all designs are subject to your own creativity. You will learn the technique of attaching beads as well as how to attach your top decoration. Lamps may or may not be completed in class because of the creativity, detail, and speed involved. However, you will leave with the techniques needed to finish your lamp at home.

 

Prerequisite for students: Practice in woodburning and using a carver

Stippling, Filigree, and Wave, Oh My! (Sat-All-3)

Participants will learn wave, filigree, and stippling techniques to incorporate into their gourd work. We will also inset a simple round or oval cabochon. The instructor will demonstrate painting techniques that will be completed at home. This is mainly a techniques class. However, depending on your skill level, you may finish your piece by the end of class.


Prerequisite skills: Previous handling of a micromotor rotary carver or Dremel is helpful.

Students need to bring: rotary carver, dust mask, sand paper, riffler files (diamond works best), carving burrs (bring what you have-I use double cut carbide burrs - a small football, tree, inverted cone, balls) filigree-point burr (Front Porch Gourds vendor will have some for sale), compass, pencil, eraser

Create a unique piece of meaningful art, using a gourd shard with a scroll containing your private message and embedding a small personal item. Your art will be beautifully displayed in a 5 x 7 wood and glass shadowbox, making an amazing display for your home or a gift for a friend. The art may be a token to support a friend going through difficulty or to memorialize a loved one. Connie and Dennis Brady are well-known gourd artists/instructors from Western Colorado, who team teach to provide a fun, interactive experience for their students.

 

Students need to bring: personal small token to be embedded into design (no larger than a quarter: orphaned earring, necklace pendant, button, beach glass, fossil, stone, etc.), woodburning tool and/or hand carving tool to a avoid wait.

Instructor will provide: Limited number of tools to borrow during class, shadowbox, scroll, epoxy clay face, embellishments, inks, metallic dyes. Items for embedding will be available also.

Learn the easy way to apply egg shells to a gourd. The egg shells will be placed in a recessed area and colored with alcohol ink. A unique border will surround the egg shells to give a pop to your gourd.

 

Student Prerequisite: Know how to use a carver and woodburner.

Students need to bring: Small clean gourd approximately 6" diameter x 6" tall at least 1/4" thick. carver will all of your burrs, woodburner (optional), sandpaper, 1/4" angular paint brush, 1/2" flat paint brush, white acrylic paint, black acrylic paint, your favorite stain or gel paint (Tandy Leather carries gel paint) to cover gourd, Aleene's clear gel glue, Exacto knife, riffler files, power strip, water bowl, paper towels, alcohol inks, skew woodburning pen, mask
